Volcanoes in Costa Rica

Costa Rica a small but ardent country. Why do I say this? Because of all the volcanoes we have. Did you know that Costa Rica has 112 volcanoes? Of which only four are active. What are they?

Arenal volcano


First let's talk about the Arenal is located in northwestern Costa Rica as part of the volcanic area of Guanacaste. By the way, Guanacaste is one of the seven provinces of the country. The Arenal is a super volcano cone-shaped, with a height of about 1700 m, and 150 kilometers north of the city of San Jose.

Rincon de la Vieja Volcano


This Volcano is characterized by water and stones with mud, as well as vents. Some eruptions occurred in 1851, 1863, 1922, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1983, 1987 and 1991.

Poas Volcano

The Poas Volcano is one of the country's most spectacular volcanoes and extraordinary beauty. It has several types of habitats such as scrub forest, areas without vegetation or sparse vegetation, the area of ​​the myrtle and the cloud forest. In the latter type of forest, abundant epiphytes such as mosses, ferns, bromeliads and orchids that grow on tree trunks.



Poás The term can be derived from the Latin name "spikes" due to the presence of some spiny plants within the area, or the existence of people called "Spikes" located near the massif.

Irazu Volcano

Irazu is an active super vocano located in Central volcanic part of the country, inside the national park that bears his name, about 30 kms north of the city of Carthage. Its summit, at an altitude of 3,432 meters, is located within the district of Santa Rosa, in the canton of Oreamuno, Cartago province.



The summit of the volcano has several craters, one of which contains a green lake of varying depth. It is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica. It is easy to visit from San Jose, through a direct path to the summit craters and a daily bus service to the summit. It is a popular tourist spot.
