Costa Rica has 845 species of birds

Costa Rica has about 845 species of birds. Isn't this wonderful? All these species work together in an ecosystem that is full of color and variety.

SERGEANT BIRD.

We were recently visiting the home of a friend in Limom and unexpectedly two birds start flying from here to there. The male and female playing .... they stopped suddenly on a branch of a tree. My friend who knows quite a bit about the subject told me that she was rather a simple brown in color. However, males, have more beauty, they are black with a strong red that catches the attention of females. This type bird is called Sergeant bird.

Insects and seeds constitute the major part of their diet. Despite being so cute they have been considered an agricultural nightmare.

Reproduction:

They lay 2 to 3 eggs bluish white with blackish spots and scratches. The incubation period is 11 to 13 days. They breed from April to August and sometimes until November, at least in the region of Rio Frio.

Both parents feed the nestlings and consists mainly of spiders, orthopteran and lepidopteran larvae.

HUMMINGBIRD

The hummingbird family contains the smallest of all birds. Many species are less than 8 cms in length. The tiniest species is the bee hummingbird of Cuba. Males are slightly smaller than females, measuring about 5 cms and weigh just 1.95 grams. Despite being so small, the males of this species, like those of many other hummingbirds, are fiercely territorial. Hummingbirds are known for their rapid flight; Powerful wing beats are so rapid that produce a buzz.

They feed on nectar and small insects found within flowers and hover in the air in front of them while introducing its long tongue and extensible. To get away from the flowers hummingbirds must fly backwards, are the only birds capable of performing the maneuver. The slender beaks of hummingbirds vary in size and curvature depending on the size and shape of the favorite flower of each species. Most hummingbirds exhibit bright colors and iridescent green, usually metal. Your throat is usually bright red, emerald-green blue, but only in males.

Feeding

Hummingbirds are nectar par excellence. His long tongue enables them to suck nectar from flowers through the rolled structure on the outside of the tongue.

The flowers are visited by hummingbirds are tubular, have abundant nectar and generally have a red hue, pink or orange, although hummingbirds visit flowers of all colors - Generally the flowers of the hummingbird derive's its food does not offer a place to be alight; they are hanging flowers, but that's no problem for them. Hummingbirds are very fast animals, can flap their wings up to 70 times per second remaining on the same site while extracting nectar from the flower.

Floral tubes often fit well with the length of the curve peaks. However, the most curious is perhaps the hummingbird piercing the side flower for nectar it is impossible to obtain in the usual way, thus becoming a nectar robber.

These small animals are proof that there is a loving creator who allows us to see and enjoy all these beautiful birds. Here in Costa Rica is a great varied of them.

If you visit Costa Rica, be alert you might suddenly see a hummingbird near you. I would like to know your opinion write your comments on my blog.
