Coco Beach in Costa Rica

You might be planing your next vacation, and perhaps you have Costa Rica as your favorite destination. If that is so, you might want to consider Playas Del Coco it is one of the oldest beach communities in Costa Rica.


Playas Del Coco is among the most well known beaches in the country. Situated near the Golf de Papagayo, this beautiful beach is easily accessible by all and is less than a 40-km drive from the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia.


This area is also one of the fastest growing tourism areas in all of Costa Rica. It has long been one of the most well-liked tourist destinations of not only local Costa Rican citizens but also foreigners. Playas Del Coco is affectionately called "El Coco" by the locals or "Coco Beach" by Americans.

Since its so close to Guanacaste's capital of Liberia, it has had historical importance. Local tourism has always been constant here. However, the city really began to grow when international tourists began to arrive in the 1990s. Thanks to Playa Del Coco and other beaches in the area of Guanacaste became a hub for tourism and business. Other neighboring beach areas began to grow as tourism and population expanded as well.

The area also boasts a variety of other pelagic fish, including Wahoo, Yellowfin tuna, and Dorado. Additionally, there are 100 pounds plus amberjack, big Cubera snapper, grouper, Cabrilla, and Jack Crevalle.


Do you love to surf? Playa Del Coco or Coco Beach is the gateway for surfers to reach places like Rock and Ollie's point this place has been immortalized in numerous surfers' magazines and movies.

By the way, the waves are superb; this busy beach is a prime scuba diving spot, with many tour and dive companies set up here.


Very popular among the locals, Playas Del Coco has a well-developed infrastructure, with good roads and plenty of activities to do like shopping, eating out, and so forth.


The beach of Playas Del Coco itself is a grayish brown and the tide here often remains quite low. Surrounded by steep cliffs and hills, this horseshoe-shaped bay area is the ideal place to have some fun. However, if you are looking for a quiet spot to relax, try staying away from the center of town, where most of the fun happens.

From Coco beach like the American know it you can also head out to Pelonas Islands, Catalinas and Bat Islands as well, which are excellent sites to spot turtles, sharks and octopuses in the natural environment.

If you are in the area, you can always use Playas Del Coco as a base camp because of its affordable accommodations, when touring the Guanacaste region.
